Just a quick update (more detailed post to follow in the next few weeks) about the FAA situation.

Date: August 10, 2012 through December 14, 2012

 

We are in the midst of closing up the house for the summer/fall and packing  up like the Beverly Hillbillies and move the entire A-Team to OKC for 18 weeks. We’re leaving on Tuesday evening Aug 7th and planning on driving straight through the night, it is a 12hr drive that I presume will take more like 24hrs with the little children. Just a reminder that this is only temporary, we’ll be back to our house in time for Christmas and also, presuming I graduate, so I can start my new job here at the En Route/ARTCC facility at Indianapolis International Airport.

 

We’re a little giddy about it, but excited! We have lots to do in very short time. Stay tuned.

We got the call back this morning with a new date for Aaron’s class, June 22!!!! Yeah! That means Aaron will be able to be there for the birth of our daughter!!! This is a HUGE burden lifted from me. Of course there are many other trials upcoming but this is giant answered prayer!!!!

We got the call, tonight. It was 8 something pm and we were wrapping up our evening with the kiddos by letting them watch a quick show to calm them down for sleep. Aaron’s phone rings and he mouths to me, “It is the FAA.” Those words changed me forever.

After about 15 minutes or less, Aaron comes back into the room and declares that he received a date for class. They want to send him on April 20! He did explain our current situation (me pregnant with child #3 and due on 6/18/12). The next date she had available for class was June 4 (Aaron’s birthday). Of course that doesn’t help much with the whole birth issue. The lady was cool and said she would be attending a meeting in the morning and see what she could do for us to push the date beyond Abilene’s birth but there is NO guarantee.

I knew this day would come…I really did. Somehow I just didn’t prepare myself enough. I am full of mixed emotions. I am excited for him to move on with his career choice but I am so afraid of what lies ahead.

1. Will he miss the birth of our daughter? If so, what will I do with my other kiddos while I am having her?

2. Will I be able to handle 3 small children all by myself?

3. Will I make it to my scheduled delivery date without him around to help? He is integral in our daily lives and I rely on him SO much…especially when the contractions kick in around 6 pm.

4. We won’t even broach the money subject. That is ridiculously scary and not even worth worrying about because it just doesn’t matter to me.

Many of you reading this probably have no idea how “easy” I really have it right now. I have a wonderful husband who is home with us 90% of the time. He is able to work from home and that has been a tremendous blessing. He works 2nd shift which means he is “all mine” during the morning and early afternoon hours and I really only have to handle the evenings “by myself” – kinda. He still bathes the kids most nights and is there to help at a moments notice. To go from having that amazing support to having him shipped off 750 miles away for 4 FULL MONTHS is unbelievably frightening for me.

Anyway, I guess the point to my post is this…

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE pray for me, the boys, and Aaron. We are in desperate need right now and want to follow the Lord’s leading (even if it is uncomfortable). We love our Lord and trust in Him and know He will see us through this. Just help (me) let go of my fears!

Part 3: What does it take to be an Air Traffic Controller?

Continuing the saga, here is part three. Part three will cover from the beginning of year 2 (August 1,2009) through the end of year 3 (July 31, 2011). I am still waiting, with Tentative Offer Letter in hand. I am guaranteed the job still, but for the last few years Indianapolis has been on a hiring freeze. They will be hiring for 2012, but I don’t know if I’m high enough on the list to make the cut for this year. Anyway, here is an account for Year 2 and Year 3. 7-AUG-2009: Receive email giving me 11 calendar days (18-AUG) to complete the following:

  • Drug test (urinalysis). There is only one place they contract with in all of Indianapolis and it was 25mi from home in a seedy neighborhood. I did the deed on the way to work so it wasn’t terribly out of the way. (1hr)
  • Tons of paperwork releasing things such as my credit report, military medical records, employment agreement, some fact sheet, acceptance/declination of job offer, and other forms I am sure that I have forgotten about already. (2hrs)
  • 2 fingerprint cards that I had to find a federally approved officer to print me and sign the cards. I called the local FAA office since I live close to the airport and they forwarded me to the TSA office inside the airport terminal. I set up a walk-in appt and took care of it. (2hrs).
  • Instructions on how and where to schedule a flight physical, and psychological exam (MMPI-2 test) no cost to me.

Total cost was a couple gallons of gas and at least 5 hours of time. Fortunately my office has free faxing, scanning and printing or that would have racked up some dough there. As you’ll see, this was a warm up for the Cost: $5

10-AUG-2009: Received email from FAA National Archives liason requesting confirmation of my military service and another form to allow them to expedite pulling my service records, specifically any medical records. Cost: $0

12-AUG-2009: Scheduled flight physical at a local Immediate Care facility for 16-AUG (cutting it close for the deadline). Cost: $0

16-AUG-2009: Went to the doctor’s office for the flight physical. The physical was fairly detailed: EKG, hearing test in a booth, basic eye exam reading the charts, color blindness test, and last but not least… my favorite part (not!)… the digital rectal exam. This place was also 25mi from home, not in a convenient area. It took 35min to get there and the wait plus physical took about 90 minutes. In all it took me almost 3 hours and about 3 gallons of gas. The records from this were to be forwarded to FAA HR immediately. Cost: $8

24-AUG-2009: Received an email back from the MMPI-2 testing office that they want to get it scheduled (finally!). They forward me onto the local FAA office in Indy and I don’t hear back from them for a week. I swear they don’t do anything expeditiously. Anyway, once I finally hear back from the Indy office I get scheduled for Weds 2-SEP at 10:00am inside the base of the air traffic control tower in the middle of the airfield. Cool!

26-AUG-2009: Contacted by FAA medical office and notified of two items from the flight physical that disqualify me (temporarily) from service:

  1. My vision. It isn’t perfect (just barely). I know that. So in order to requalify myself, I have to have a vision exam, at my expense, ASAP plus it has to be filled out by my optometrist on special government forms. You’ve gotta be kidding me!
  2. I have terrible allergies as noted in the paperwork. To treat them I daily take generic Zyrtec which according to the FAA is known to cause drowsiness and cloud mental processes. I can clear myself of this infraction by switching to Claritin which is approved. WHATEVER! I have taken pretty much every single antihistamine known to man and I am very over-tolerant of their side effects. I can take doses of antihistamines that would make the average man pass out cold but for me it is like I’m taking sugar pills. No drowsiness whatsoever. However, Claritin makes me rather irritable and cloudy and Zyrtec has no nasty side effects and I’ve been on it for 7 years. I tell the FAA this and they do not care. I must switch to Claritin or forfeit the job. As I want the job, I concede.

31-AUG-2009: Eye exam day! I went to the local Wal-Mart and took their battery of tests, pokes and prods and the Doc was nice and filled out all the forms as needed. Cost $45.

2-SEP-2009: MMPI-2 test day. I get to the tower, just getting parked was a major ordeal with airport security, and get inside and the lady to administer the test informs me that the PC they use for the test is all messed up and so I’m out of luck because her IT people can’t get to it for awhile. I get all sad (it worked, hehe) and she said she’d try to call across the airport to the ARTCC  building (where I interviewed back on 9-JUL-09) to see if they could give me the test. Sure enough they said “sure, come on over.” At least I knew where I was going and how security operated over there. So I’m starting the test an hour late, paranoid-ly thinking that this is some stress part of the test to see if I crack or something. This test is 567 questions in length, all true or false. They are weird. Some are really weird. I finished the test in about 1 hour. So I said my goodbyes, and went home. If you screw up the test and are flagged as a psychopath, you’re not eliminated but instead you have to visit a FAA shrink to make sure you’re not totally whacko and maybe you just misread the test or had test anxiety. I never had to have a visit so I assume I passed? Total cost was 3 hours and a gallon of gas. Cost: $2

23-SEP-2009: Contacted regarding my security clearance. There were three minor details that needed further clarification, and one detail that would require my signing an affidavit (no, nothing criminal!). The agent was willing to meet me at my employer, so it was really easy and not an inconvenience on my part. Our tax dollars hard at work! Cost: $0

24-OCT-2009: Contacted by FAA medical  office regarding my still ongoing medical clearance. They received my military records and in sifting through that, it would seem they are at least thorough if nothing else. They uncovered that in 2002 an Army Doc diagnosed me with rheumatoid arthritis. That is interesting since I was never informed of this. Had it been true I would have been rejected. So, I have to get my family Doc to inspect me for rheumatoid arthritis and sign a letter addressed to the FAA stating I do not have rheumatoid arthritis. Fortunately I was scheduled the very next week anyway for my annual physical which is covered by my insurance so the doctor’s visit would be free. Additionally the FAA discovered a near fatal car accident I had when I was 16. They were concerned of brain damage or loss of consciousness. Stop laughing about the brain damage part. In order to get around this one, I had to contact the hospital that treated me and have them shlep through their archive and pull my file to prove I had in fact not lost consciousness. This ends up taking me until mid January 2010 (over 90 days!) and dozens of phone calls to the records department to procure the proper paperwork. Cost: $0 and at least 10 hours.

5-APR-2010: FAA HR emails me notifying me that my HR contact has moved on and gives me the contact info for the new person. Geez, I’m outlasting HR staff and I haven’t even been hired yet!

29-July-2011: The cliffhanger: Exactly 2 years after my tentative offer letter, and 2 days shy of 3 years since I applied for the position I receive an email from FAA HR stating that this year (2012) they will be hiring. The bad news is he cannot tell us who is getting hired yet. The email is directed to a wide audience and so I try not to get too excited.

This pretty much sums up year 2. Ultimately the medical clearance delays likely cost me getting sent to the academy in 2010 since by the time everything was finally settled they had already filled all job openings. Oh well. the Lord will never put me in a place where he doesn’t want me. There were a few exchanges of email between April 2010 and July 2011 (mostly just me inquiring when we’re going to move forward?!) but nothing of any substance since they weren’t hiring.

Year 2 total cost to me: $60 and dozens of hours of driving around, being poked and prodded, digging up and filing paperwork, and countless phone calls.

Cumulative expenses for first 3 years: $654.90

Part 2: What does it take to be an Air Traffic Controller?

Before going further, I would like to say that I am posting this series about the rigors of becoming (or not) an Air Traffic Controller in order to hopefully shed a little light on my leaning on the Lord during this process. Thus far I haven’t really stated it in the series, but without the Lord I am nothing and all efforts are for naught. Psalm 28:7 comes to mind:

“The LORD is my strength and my shield;
my heart trusts in him, and I am helped.
My heart leaps for joy
and I will give thanks to him in song.”

I went into this potential career change with no preparation, and nothing more than an hour’s worth of research on the Interweb. I prayed that if it was in the Lord’s will, that He would see me through it, or at least teach me through failure (not getting the job) what I need to learn. After all, He is the Rabbi. I have no problems staying in my current career path, albeit not exactly exciting and fulfilling, it does provide for the needs of my family and I am grateful for that. Part 2 of this series will cover from 1-FEB-2009 through 7-31-2009.

27-MAR-2009: After I have given up and forgotten about this, I received an email stating that I need to choose my three preferred cities to work in and to choose my career path: Tower, En Route Center, or both to increase my chances. Feeling cocky and ready to be done with this process, I simply put down Indianapolis as my only choice, and En Route only. Frankly, the tower didn’t seem that interesting, and when I looked into En Route it seemed cool so I went for it. I basically flipped a coin, so to speak. I didn’t care one way or the other. On a different note it is funny that I whimsically went through this just in the mood for a career change to something I always had an interest in but no real knowledge of. Some people get a bachelor’s degree, have military experience or both and still can’t get into Air Traffic Control. Here they have all this prior knowledge and keen interest and get left out and here I am flipping coins. That said, I guess I don’t have the job yet. Cost: $0

19-MAY-2009: I received an email from FAA Human Resources stating that I have been selected for Air Route Traffic Control Center in Indianapolis, Indiana ( aka ARTCC or En Route). I have to reply Y or N if I’m interested (YES! YES!). I have to choose from the traditional pre-employment processing, or Pre-Employment Processing Centers (PEPCs). PEPC is an expedited method of processing that includes your interview, security screening, medical evaluation, psychological evaluation and drug test. All at once in five hours sounds great, but once again I’d have to travel up to Chicago on my own dime. No thanks, this crap is getting expensive. If I choose traditional, it will take longer but I will get it all done locally in Indianapolis. Cost $0

21-MAY-2009: The next step is the face to face interview to make sure I am a real person (I guess). I receive an email stating that I will be contacted by Indy ARTCC to schedule my interview. Cost: $0

28-JUN-2009: Indy HR Manager emails me to schedule an interview. I am given a slew of weeks and days to choose from in July and August from 8:30am to 3pm. After much emailing back and forth, Thursday July 9th at 10:00am is selected and agreed upon. Cost: $0

9-JUL-2009: Interview day. I put on a dress shirt, tie, slacks and arrive at ARTCC in time to go through the security checkpoint and get escorted to meet the interviewer. It takes about an hour or so to finish and went well. I had done quite a bit of research on the types of scripted FAA questions that they ask, and I even dug up on the Internet an organizational chart for Indy ARTCC and a new employee handbook with a brief history of the site. It impressed the interviewer dude that I knew all that stuff. Approved to move on. Cost: $2 (gas).

29-JUL-2009: Received an email from FAA human resources with a tentative offer letter. I simply had to print/read/sign it and fax/email it back to them. Easy enough. Wow, could I be getting close?! Think again, nope. Cost: $0

The second 6 months of hiring process expense: $2. Cumulative for first year of process: Much travel, hours of time, and $594.90!

Part 1: What does it take to be an Air Traffic Controller?

For those who don’t know, I have been going through the hiring process to become an air traffic controller for awhile and there is still no end in sight. Just in case you were a) curious how this works, and b) wondering where I am in the process let me break my experience, thus far, down for all y’all. To save space, I’ll post these in 6 month segments. Part one will be the first six months, from 30-JUL-2008 through 31-JAN-2009. Part 2 will follow in a couple days. Here goes nothing, good thing I kept emails for records of this headache!

30-JUL-2008: Applied for job posting for Air Traffic Control Specialist. Had choice of three locations, chose only Indianapolis (drastically reduced my chances) Cost: $0

31-JUL-2008: Nationwide job posting closes for Air Traffic Control Specialist. Cost: $0

26-OCT-2008: Notified by email that my application was reviewed and screened and approved for me to take the AT-SAT exam. This exam will be all day long. The testing authority will be contacting me “soon” with further details. Cost: $0

2-DEC-2008: Contacted by the testing authority. Notified that the exam will be one day of my choosing between 5-Jan-2009 and 17-JAN-2009 in Lisle, IL at the Wyndham Hotel. I needed to call and schedule my test date. “All travel and lodging arrangements and expenses are your responsibility.” Cost: $0

16-JAN-2009: Anna’s 31st birthday. At the time I was working hourly as a contracted consultant so I had no paid time off. I took the day off without pay (~$275). We rent a car for the weekend ($154.91) and drive to the Wyndham Hotel (a very nice place might I add) for the exam on Saturday the 17th. It is a record breaking -20°F air temperature in Lisle, IL. We have a 4mo old baby, and it is simply deplorable out. The hotel room is impossible to keep above 60°F due to the outside air. Yes, the heater worked.  We were able to get a “family fun night package” at the hotel that included the room; a still-in-theaters pay-per-view movie; a gourmet pizza, soda, and popcorn from the kitchen; and free gourmet breakfast the next morning ($135.99). It was nice had I not been apprehensive about the exam. Cost: $565.90

17-JAN-2009: Exam day. The gourmet breakfast must have been not bad, because I’d remember it if it had been awful. I do remember the lady taking the orders was also busing the tables and cooking and there were probably 15 people in there, most of us needing to be done by 7:45am so we could check in for the exam. I barely inhaled my meal in time to walk across the lobby for check-in. The AT-SAT exam was slated for 8 hours. It was a self-paced, computer-based exam. You could take breaks at certain points of whatever length you saw fit. I took the recommended 2 fifteen minute breaks and a forty-five minute lunch. I finished the exam in around 5 hours including the breaks. It was fun and I felt that I did the best I could. I don’t have records of gasoline, but it is fair to assume that we drove about 450 miles roundtrip and got ~25mpg @ $1.50/gal which would be $27. Cost: $27

21-JAN-2009: Exam results are posted. “An AT-SAT score of 70 or above is necessary for passing. Your score was 100. Eligible applicants are categorized as “well qualified” or “qualified” based on AT-SAT scores.” A 100 is considered a perfect score. Whew! Cost: $0

First 6 months of hiring process cumulative expense: Much travel, hours of time, and $592.90!
